The FCC currently issues three classes of amateur radio licenses: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra.  This class is for the entry level license and you must have it before you test for the General Class license.

For the class, We ask that you purchase one study guide and read it prior to and during class to keep up with the material as we present it.  There are two study guides we recommend listed in alphabetic order below.

        • ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 6th ed Technician class license 2026 – 2030. (ARRL). $31.30 on Amazon.  July 1, 2026 is when the new question pool goes live.
        • Fast track to your Technician Class Ham Radio License by Michael and Kerry Burnette (Burnette). $24.97 on Amazon.  Also written for 2026 – 2030 question pool.

Both books have the entire question pool:

        • ARRL has the questions and answers at the back of the book with page numbers, as well as in the chapters that apply to the content of the questions.
        • Burnette has all questions listed numerically in the index with page numbers, as well as in the chapters that apply to the content of the questions.
        • Questions and answers are in the chapters that apply to the content of the questions in both books.  No separate list of questions and answers in Burnette.
        • The question pool is on the internet if you want to print it out.

Both books explain the material and relate it to the questions.  ARRL makes use of technical jargon in their explanations while Burnette explanations are more practical and can be easier to understand. Both have explanations of the minimal math that is in the Technician license exam.  Burnette’s explanations are a bit easier to understand.  If you were never a fan of math and don’t make much use of it beyond reconciling your bank statement the math will take extra time to understand, but it is not calculus, only algebra and the metric system.
